Gilad "Gil" Elbaz (b. 1971) is a serial entrepreneur and data infrastructure pioneer who co-founded
TenOneTen Ventures. His career has been defined by building foundational data and AI technologies
that have shaped the modern internet.
In 1998, Gil co-founded Applied Semantics (originally Oingo Inc.) with his brother
Eytan Elbaz and Caltech classmate Adam Weissman. The company created CIRCA, a contextual
semantic technology that matched relevant ads to web page content β this became Google AdSense
after Google acquired the company in April 2003 for ~$102 million. By 2005, AdSense accounted
for an estimated 15% of Google's total revenue. Gil received the prestigious Google Founders' Award
in 2005 for AdSense's success, and served as Engineering Director of Google Santa Monica until 2007.
He then founded Factual Inc. in 2008, a location data platform that raised over $100M
from Andreessen Horowitz, Index Ventures, and others. Factual merged with Foursquare in 2020,
where Gil now serves as Co-Executive Chairman on the Board of Directors.
Gil also founded the Common Crawl Foundation in 2007, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that maintains
a petabyte-scale open repository of web crawl data. Common Crawl has become arguably the most consequential
open-data initiative in the AI era β its data was foundational for training GPT, Stable Diffusion,
DALL-E, and many other large language models. Gil personally financed Common Crawl for years;
in 2023, Anthropic and OpenAI each donated $250K.
Through the Elbaz Family Foundation (with wife Elyssa), Gil has distributed over
$23 million in grants supporting educational and environmental initiatives. He serves on
the boards of the X PRIZE Foundation (since 2006) and is a Trustee of Caltech
and advisory council member for Caltech's Resnick Sustainability Institute.
